Meet the Family
Khomas Quarter Horse Stud is a family operation from the ground up — bred, trained, and run by the Fouries on Wasserfallei.
The Farm
Wasserfallei lies about 90 km west of Windhoek, deep in the Khomas Hochland — a rugged, mountainous stretch of central Namibia where the terrain does most of the talking. The ground is rocky and steep in places, and a lot of the farm simply isn’t reachable by vehicle. That’s where our horses earn their keep: checking cattle, moving stock, and covering ground a bakkie never could.
It’s a hard, honest kind of farming. Drought years can be tough on the veld, but when the rain does come, the Hochland turns green fast and the difference is dramatic. Working this landscape day in and day out is exactly why we breed for the kind of Quarter Horse that can handle it — sure-footed, level-headed, and built for real work.
The Region
Central Namibia’s highland escarpment — and the backdrop to everything we breed for.
The Hochland is a rugged plateau on the edge of the Great Escarpment, rising from the Namib lowlands to peaks over 2,000m — part of a mountain belt that has shaped this landscape for hundreds of millions of years.
Reached from the capital via steep gravel passes like Spreetshoogte, Remhoogte, and Gamsberg. The roads are slow and the terrain unforgiving — part of why horseback remains the most practical way to work the ground.
Hot, dry summers and mild winters, with rainfall that swings between drought and sudden green flushes. Thorn bush, rocky outcrops, and wide-open grazing define the veld our horses and cattle live on year-round.
Every horse in our program is raised on the same rocky hills and open plains it will one day be asked to work. It’s a philosophy, not just a location.
